PREVIOUSLY ON VIEW AT ART SAINT LOUIS

Fiber Focus 2007
September 10 - October 18, 2007

Fiber Focus was designed to highlight contemporary fiber works by Midwest regional artists living in Missouri and the bordering 8 states. Since 1995 and our inaugural Fiber Focus exhibition, Art Saint Louis has worked to expand pre-conceived notions of what contemporary fiber art is.

This year's Fiber Focus 2007 featured 47 artworks in a vast array of traditions, styles, themes, and media, from non-traditional quilted works and off loom beaded sculpture to a basket made from pine needles, from a garment woven with recycled holiday gift wrap, to a giant squid-like form made of handmade paper, gut and reed. The works in this year's show reach beyond traditional craft and fall firmly in the realm of contemporary art.

Serving as juror for Fiber Focus 2007 was Jane Sauer, an internationally exhibited and collected textile artist and sculptor based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A studio artist for over 34 years, Sauer is the owner and director of Jane Sauer Gallery. She earned her BFA at Washington University in St. Louis (1959) and later studied in Washington University's School of Architecture (1976-78). Jane has received two NEA grants and took First Place at the Fourth International Exhibit of Miniature Textiles, British Crafts Centre, London.

Sauer's work is in the permanent collections of Museum of Arts & Design, Arkansas Arts Center, Detroit Institute of Art, Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, The Mint Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Saint Louis Art Museum, and Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art. Highly respected in both the fine art and contemporary craft worlds, Jane has served as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the American Craft Council and she currently serves on the Board of Directors of Studio Art Quilts Associates. Jane has curated and juried numerous exhibitions, including the Studio Art Quilt Associates' current international exhibit, Transformations 06: Artists Working with Fiber.
